Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, in the name of Allah the most Merciful, the most Compassionate.

Today, we will journey back in history to discuss a mournful event, which changed the course of Islam, an event so woeful that it resonates in our hearts even today. We will talk about our dear Hazrath Ali رضي الله عنه the fourth Caliph of Islam, his virtues, his noble life, and his tragic martyrdom.

Hazrath Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنه was not just the fourth Caliph, but he was also the Prophet Muhammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم cousin and his son-in-law. He was born inside the sacred sanctuary of the Kaaba in Makkah, a distinction no other person in history holds. He is remembered as one of the most devoted and righteous companions of our beloved Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him).

In the 40th year of the Hijri calendar, during the month of Ramadan, a time of spiritual ascension for Muslims, a tragic event unfolded. Hazrath Ali رضي الله عنه was struck by a poisonous sword by Ibn Muljam while performing the Fajr Salah, the pre-dawn prayer, in the mosque of Kufa, Iraq. This nefarious act was driven by an extremist faction named the Kharijites, who did not agree with the peace treaty Hazrath Ali رضي الله عنه had signed after the Battle of Siffin. Ibn Muljam, a member of these Kharijites, dealt a blow that would darken the pages of Islamic history.

Hazrath Ali رضي الله عنه , despite being fatally wounded, demonstrated his immense kindness and strength of character. When brought a drink, Hadhrat Ali رضي الله عنه asked it to be offered to Ibn Muljam too, demonstrating an act of mercy to even those who wished to harm him. This profound act of kindness encapsulated the true essence of Islam that Hazrath Ali رضي الله عنه represented.

After a few painful days, on the 21st of Ramadan, Hazrath Ali رضي الله عنه left this mortal world and met his Creator – a martyr, a true warrior whose life was enveloped in righteousness and patience. He left behind a legacy of justice, humane understanding, religious tolerance, and high moral conduct.

Let us remember his sacrifice, his steadfastness in serving Islam and the Muslim Ummah. And let us pray, hoping to acquire a fragment of his character, his love for Allah, and his commitment to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم . May Allah bless us with the tawfiq to follow in his righteous footsteps. Ameen.

Prophet Muhammed صلى الله عليه وسلم Said of Hahdray Ali :

Words of wisdom from Hadhrat Ali رضي الله عنه :

“Certainly the one who has no patience has no Imaan”

“People are of two types , they are either your brothers in faith, or your equals in humanity”

“The most helpless of people is the one who is helpless in reforming himself”

“Your tongue is the interpreter of your intellect”
