The story of IMAAM HUSSEIN رضي الله عنه

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

My dear brothers and sisters, let us journey back in time and unravel the events of a historical day which symbolizes bravery, sacrifice, and unconditional devotion towards Allah. This day, the day of Ashura, marks the battle of Karbala, a story that brings tears to the eyes and humility to the hearts of many.

In 680 AD, on the 10th day of Muharram, the holy month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar, a deeply significant event took place in the desert plains of Karbala, now a part of modern-day Iraq.

The grandson of our beloved Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) and the son of Ali and Fatima (may Allah be pleased with them), Hazrat Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him), along with his family and companions, totalling about 72, were confronted by an army of thousands.

This confrontation was instigated by the political tension of that era. The Umayyad ruler Yazid, who had recently ascended the throne, demanded allegiance from all notable figures, including Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه . However, Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه being a man of principle, could not pledge loyalty to a ruler he believed was straying from the path of Islam.

Despite being outnumbered and aware of the inevitable tragedy that was to unfold, Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه and his followers stood their ground. They chose martyrdom over deviation from their Islamic principles, showing an unparalleled level of devotion and courage.

The event of Karbala is deeply sorrowful and mournful, for it reminds us of the brutality that Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه and his followers endured — due to thirst, deprivation, and eventual martyrdom — to uphold the teachings of Islam. In Sunni Islamic tradition, this day does not represent a theological divide but rather a historic event embedded with lessons of righteousness, devotion, and sacrifice.

As Sunni Muslims, we respect and honor all the Sahaba رضي الله عنه - the companions of the Prophet Mohammed صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ . While we focus on the lessons of faith, courage, and integrity that the tragedy of Karbala carries, we strive not to accentuate the differences or engage in sectarian divide

We narrate the incidence of Karbala as an essential page in the book of Islamic history, filled with lessons that are timeless in their value. The courage manifested by Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه inspires believers to stand for justice, righteousness, and truth, and reminds us that the pleasure of Allah is the ultimate reward, even in the face of immense hardship.

In conclusion, my dear brothers and sisters, let us remember and beautifully wrap up this narrative with what Allah Almighty says in the Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:154): "And say not of those who are slain in the way of Allah: 'They are dead.' Nay, they are living, though ye perceive it not."

The incident at Karbala urges us to remember that the purpose of our lives is to live to please Allah and stand up for justice and righteousness even in times of testing. May Allah grant us the strength to live in the footsteps of our Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) and his noble family. We will be visiting the Mazaar of Imaam Hussain رضي الله عنه and the shuhuda Karbala رضي الله عنه
